EWMBA eZine - Week of May 15, 2008

A Word from the EWMBAA President

First of all, congratulations to the graduating class of 2008!

In the past 6 months, the EWMBAA has had quite a whirl. Here are some updates:

Academic: Winners of the Cheit Teaching Award are Professor Catherine Wolfram (Evening) and Professor Wasim Azhar (Weekend), with special mention to Professor Ganesh Iyer and Professor Meghan Busse. The GSI Award goes to Robert Seaman, with special mention to for Todd Fitch. (Many thanks to Kiran Prabhakara for driving the nomination process!) Professor Stowsky, new Dean of Academic Instruction, also held Town Hall meetings to gather feedback. Sarah Milstein has been following up with Jay – so please let her have your ideas. We’re also exploring ways to make video recording better. Please send feedback to co-chairs Kiran Prabhakara and Josh Han.

Admissions: Co-chairs Stacey Fang and Chris Lin – and their volunteer teams - have been working welcoming Round 1 students on message boards and with personal phone calls. Thanks to all our current EWMBA students who attended the Round 1 Welcome Reception!

Alumni and Careers: Satadip Dutta (co-chair for Alumni Relations) helped put together the talk on Consulting (with alumni Richard Chen), while Kae Huang (co-chair of Careers) moderated the Banking/Finance (with alumni Hiram Moy, and his friends Tim Ome and Michelle Lee). We’re exploring affiliations with professional organizations (like ASCEND which focuses on increasing diversity in the banking/finance world.)

Communication: Co-chairs Ben Chong and Anlei Lee have been excellent in stimulating communications with this eZine and with our new interactive website. Thanks also to Mimi Frusha and our cohort reps for helping to pass messages along! We ran a survey on how students want to communicate, and are exploring a secure repository for class feedback and discussion.

Community Service: Kenneth So and Jennifer Elliot have organized a couple of Community Service events so far at Palo Alto. Next up, Bay to Breakers this Sunday - a joint effort with our Social Committee (Thanks Ting-Mao Chao!) with exclusive limited edition Haas EWMBA t-shirts (designed by Kenneth So!) We’re working on ways we can better communicate global emergency fund relief awareness – and you’ll find links on our website.

Social: Co-chairs Mandar Shinde and Laurel Coster have organized 4 after-school socials and we’re having more over Summer! If you’re having an EWMBAA social event and would like us to sponsor a keg of beer, please contact our co-chairs.

The Executive team has also been involved in the searches for a permanent EWMBA Program Director and for the new Haas Dean. In addition, we’re working on a Haas Family Day on June 22, stay tuned! We’re always open to having new ideas for the rest of this calendar year, so please let us know!

- Jasmin

Haas Family Day
Date: Sunday, June 22
Time and Location:
To be confirmed. Tentatively: 10am – 3pm at Haas

Here’s the party to end all end-of-year parties.

The major difference with all the other parties is that you can bring your families to this one. It is the perfection occasion to show off your school to your long-suffering MBA-spouse and kids. It’s also great opportunity for said-MBA-spouse to put faces to your project team members. Well, maybe that’s not such a good idea…

Anyway, watch this space for more information!
