Financial Aid Deadline to Borrow Loans for this Fall Semester 2009

Did you know you may be able to borrow additional loan funds during the academic year, if you have not already borrowed up to the Cost of Attendance? The recommended deadline to process loan funds for this fall semester is Thursday December 10, 2009. If loan processing is not completed by the 10th, it is unlikely that additional funds will disburse before the winter shutdown. Loan disbursements are split evenly between the two semesters. The deadline to borrow additional funds for spring semester is April 15, 2010.

Please review your award summary in the Financial Aid section in BearFacts to ensure all anticipated fall semester Federal Loans or private loans are listed as paid. You may need to complete supplemental steps if the loan funds have not paid. Refer to the financial aid website for more details. (Please note, institutional loans, and some non-loan funds such as VA Benefits will only appear as accepted even if they have paid.)
For further information please contact us at finaid@haas.berkeley.edu or check out our website: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/EWMBA/finaid/index.html

Wal-Mart has been both lauded for its leadership in implementing socially responsible business solutions and questioned for the motives behind its actions. It is indisputable, however, that when the world's largest retailer makes seemingly small changes, like promoting the sale of fluorescent lightbulbs in its stores, the positive impact is enormous--a reduction of over 28 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

Please join a conversation with Wal-Mart's Chief Administrative Officer, where he will share stories about how leading responsibly has helped to positively transform Wal-Mart and consequently has made a broader contribution to society.

Haas Thanksgiving Dinner Matching – Share You Feast!

Date: Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Thanksgiving is right around the corner (Thursday November 26th) and with it one of the most American holiday celebrations of all. About one third of the Haas Full-time MBA students are international and many have never attended a Thanksgiving dinner before. Since this is such a uniquely American tradition, we would like to match up Americans who are willing to share their Thanksgiving feast with International Students for whom this might be a once in a lifetime cultural experience.

We are seeking a few host families who live in the Berkeley or Albany area and would be willing to host a Haas student and partner. (We have three international couples who are interested in experiencing Thanksgiving, and one of the couples has a 1-year-old child.) If you would be willing to open your home on this holiday, please email me (andrea_siciliano@mba.berkeley.edu) and let me know how many people would you be willing to host and where you are located. Many thanks, Andrea Siciliano MBA Candidate 2010

Everyone has a compelling story.” Oprah says. I say everyone has a compelling career tale, complete with passions, turning points, achievements, obstacles, and desires met. And this tale is our most authentic, memorable, and compelling—most likely to get us hired. But most of us don’t know ours.

In this one-hour webinar, I will walk as many of you as I can through your own, unique (and so differentiated) career narrative from undergrad to Berkeley, where we will identify the professional traits and roles that truly define what you do and how you do it. There will be a worksheet handout for all to complete during the session. You can reflect on (or define) your own identity while seeing others discover their own.

Haas Leadership Club presents: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM
Come see where all your money went.
Free admission for the movie; $5 for pizza (free for Leadership Club members)

Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, the film is a multidimensional study of one of the biggest business scandals in American history. The chronicle takes a look at one of the greatest corporate disasters in history, in which top executives from the 7th largest company in the United States walked away with over one billion dollars, leaving investors and employees with nothing. The film features insider accounts and rare corporate audio and video tapes that reveal colossal personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy and the utter moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy. The human drama that unfolds within Enron's walls resembles a Greek tragedy and produced a domino effect that continues to shape the face of our economy and ethical code.

Seeking out Volunteers for the 3rd Annual Berkeley Finance Conference

Date: Thursday, November 13, 2009
Time: 8:30AM – 6:30PM
Location: Haas

The Berkeley Finance Conference is the only conference of its kind on the West Coast. The first two iterations of the event, in 2007 and 2008, were phenomenally successful, bringing together practitioners, students, and academia to discuss and share ideas and trends. The 2009 Conference will build upon the strengths and accomplishments of the last two years and will continue to explore current financial topics and challenges.

But we cannot do it alone, we need volunteers to help us with everything from registering attendees to helping out panelists, supervising catering, etc. You don’t need to volunteer the whole day, just in two hour increments, and then you can attend the rest of the conference for free. For questions please contact Ziad Hachem (ziad_hachem@mba.berkeley.edu)

Many companies today can use existing platforms to build and grow their products without having to invest large sums of time or money. We try to make each such business even nimbler by first attempting to understand our customers’ needs and then quickly delivering simple products that we think meet them. This iterative process of customer and product development continues until we discover a winning formula. We call the ongoing dance “rapid-fire marketing,” and the companies that practice it “adrenaline startups.”

"So how did (CEO Lee) Scott take a lumbering retailer that was tone-deaf on social issues and transform it into one of the more progressive companies of the day?" - Fortune Magazine
