EWMBA eZine - Week of November 18, 2009

Announcements:

Make your Vote Count!

It’s that time of the year again. Polls for EWMBA Association Executive Committee are opening today.

As members of the EWMBA community it’s not just our right but responsibility to contribute and make our voices heard via this democratic process. Can’t help but remember this gem from Sir Winston Churchill: “Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried”

The EWMBA Admissions Committee wants YOU

The EWMBAA Admissions Committee is actively involved in creating and coordinating the admissions experience for the class of prospective and incoming students. We work in conjunction with the Program Office Admissions Team to welcome new Haas students, particularly with welcome calls and receptions and the noteworthy Orientation weekend.

We’re looking for you as an EWMBA student to join our committee this year, so you can help in meeting and shaping bonds and relationships with our future classmates. You’ll get a peek into the future of the Haas student body and become an integral resource to unifying and strengthening the Haas we know today. Please apply today at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=R_2fdL1gEmhUchJvNfejPu6A_3d_3d

The deadline is November 30th, 2009. We look forward to your applications and working closely with you. Application results will be made available to you before Finals and the new committee will on-board in early January. For further questions, please contact the interim co-chairs, Shikha Maheshwari (shikha_maheshwari@mba.berkeley.edu) or Tim Lee (tim_lee@mba.berkeley.edu)

New Haas EWMBA Student Portal

Hi Everyone! For those of you who haven't tried it yet, the EWMBAA Technology Committee would like to encourage you to log in and start using the new Haas EWMBA student portal. The product of a collaborative effort from Haas IT, the EWMBA Program Office, and the Technology Committee, the new portal is designed to be a one-stop information resource for all EWMBA students.

Logon with your Haas email username and password at http://portal.haas.berkeley.edu today! Also, if you have any ideas or suggestions to make the portal better, please do let us know. You can send feedback right through the portal. The portal still has plenty of room to grow, and your feedback will help it evolve into the ultimate information resource for all EWMBA students.

You owe it to your own leadership development to understand this massive lapse of personal and professional responsibility.

Haas Leadership Club presents: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM
Come see where all your money went.
Free admission for the movie; $5 for pizza (free for Leadership Club members)

Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, the film is a multidimensional study of one of the biggest business scandals in American history. The chronicle takes a look at one of the greatest corporate disasters in history, in which top executives from the 7th largest company in the United States walked away with over one billion dollars, leaving investors and employees with nothing. The film features insider accounts and rare corporate audio and video tapes that reveal colossal personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy and the utter moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy. The human drama that unfolds within Enron's walls resembles a Greek tragedy and produced a domino effect that continues to shape the face of our economy and ethical code.

Haas Thanksgiving Dinner Matching – Share You Feast!

Date: Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Thanksgiving is right around the corner (Thursday November 26th) and with it one of the most American holiday celebrations of all. About one third of the Haas Full-time MBA students are international and many have never attended a Thanksgiving dinner before. Since this is such a uniquely American tradition, we would like to match up Americans who are willing to share their Thanksgiving feast with International Students for whom this might be a once in a lifetime cultural experience.

We are seeking a few host families who live in the Berkeley or Albany area and would be willing to host a Haas student and partner. (We have three international couples who are interested in experiencing Thanksgiving, and one of the couples has a 1-year-old child.) If you would be willing to open your home on this holiday, please email me (andrea_siciliano@mba.berkeley.edu) and let me know how many people would you be willing to host and where you are located. Many thanks, Andrea Siciliano MBA Candidate 2010

Everyone has a compelling story.” Oprah says. I say everyone has a compelling career tale, complete with passions, turning points, achievements, obstacles, and desires met. And this tale is our most authentic, memorable, and compelling—most likely to get us hired. But most of us don’t know ours.

In this one-hour webinar, I will walk as many of you as I can through your own, unique (and so differentiated) career narrative from undergrad to Berkeley, where we will identify the professional traits and roles that truly define what you do and how you do it. There will be a worksheet handout for all to complete during the session. You can reflect on (or define) your own identity while seeing others discover their own.
