Seeking out Volunteers for the 3rd Annual Berkeley Finance Conference

Date: Thursday, November 13, 2009
Time: 8:30AM – 6:30PM
Location: Haas

The Berkeley Finance Conference is the only conference of its kind on the West Coast. The first two iterations of the event, in 2007 and 2008, were phenomenally successful, bringing together practitioners, students, and academia to discuss and share ideas and trends. The 2009 Conference will build upon the strengths and accomplishments of the last two years and will continue to explore current financial topics and challenges.

But we cannot do it alone, we need volunteers to help us with everything from registering attendees to helping out panelists, supervising catering, etc. You don’t need to volunteer the whole day, just in two hour increments, and then you can attend the rest of the conference for free. For questions please contact Ziad Hachem (ziad_hachem@mba.berkeley.edu)

Many companies today can use existing platforms to build and grow their products without having to invest large sums of time or money. We try to make each such business even nimbler by first attempting to understand our customers’ needs and then quickly delivering simple products that we think meet them. We call the ongoing dance “rapid-fire marketing,” and the companies that practice it “adrenaline startups.”

"So how did (CEO Lee) Scott take a lumbering retailer that was tone-deaf on social issues and transform it into one of the more progressive companies of the day?" - Fortune Magazine

Wal-Mart has been both lauded for its leadership in implementing socially responsible business solutions and questioned for the motives behind its actions. It is indisputable, however, that when the world's largest retailer makes seemingly small changes, like promoting the sale of fluorescent lightbulbs in its stores, the positive impact is enormous--a reduction of over 28 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

Please join a conversation with Wal-Mart's Chief Administrative Officer, where he will share stories about how leading responsibly has helped to positively transform Wal-Mart and consequently has made a broader contribution to society.

Venture capital is a driving force behind innovation and entrepreneurship and has funded many of the successful companies in technology- and science-based industries. Yet the inner workings of venture capital firms are a well-guarded secret. The unique, opaque culture of venture capital is closed to those without privileged entrĂ©e. This course offers a window into the workings of the most successful venture capitalists in the world’s premiere innovation cluster, Silicon Valley California.

Program Description
By the end of this course, you will become an insider into the venture capital process. Through lectures, cases, a simulation and guest speakers from the venture community, you will gain an understanding of how venture capitalists and their firms identify exciting opportunities, structure deals, build management teams, create ventures of scale and impact a venture’s economics. Learn the methods that VC partnerships utilize to raise the funds they manage, how they make investment decisions, value companies and manage the deal process.
