EWMBA eZine - Week of January 22, 2009

EWMBAA Committees

Welcome back to the Spring Semester!

As you consider finalizing your class schedule, also think about what EWMBAA Committees you might want to join. Applications to join committees will be available in upcoming weeks.

Below are brief descriptions of what each committee does.

(1) ACADEMIC AFFAIRS: Works to resolve a wide range of academic and administrative issues with the EWMBA program office and Haas school administration.

(2) ADMISSIONS: Helps the school admissions office to attract the best applicants and welcome newly admitted students. Helps integrate first-year students into the school and promotes the concerns of first year students.

(3) ALUMNI RELATIONS: Promotes communications and interaction among current students and the Haas Alumni Network and individual alumni. Promotes Haas EWMBAs among business leaders, and enhances the exposure of EWMBAs to the business community.

(4) CAREER SERVICES: Advocates improvements to the range and quality of career-management and job-search services available through the Career Center to EWMBA students.

(5) COMMUNICATIONS: Facilitates communications and the flow of information among EWMBA students and other groups in the Haas community through our online newsletter, website and other appropriate channels.

(6) COMMUNITY SERVICE: Facilitates the involvement of EWMBA students in community-service activities, and works to recognize the contribution of volunteers.

(7) SOCIAL: Organize social and networking events for students, including with students in other programs or with alumni.

(8)*NEW* TECHNOLOGY: This new committee will work closely with Haas IT to improve student experiences for all technology related aspects including web services, computing, and off-site access.

Look for the applications soon and in the mean time, ask yourself – which of these areas are you most passionate about and where could you make a difference?

- Your EWMBAA Executive Committee – Anlei, Vijay, Amy, Abe

Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum
Prediction Markets: Entrepreneurial Opportunities In Fortune Telling
Date: Thursday, January 22, 2009
Time: 6:30-8:30pm
Location: Andersen Auditorium

Wouldn't it be great to know the future? Imagine being able to accurately forecast future sales, assess the likelihood of success for a new startup or anticipate how well stocks will perform. Now we don't need to rely on fortune tellers, palm readers or tarot cards. Enter prediction markets - "smart" markets capable of accurately predicting outcomes of uncertain future events by harnessing what author James Surowiecki coined "the wisdom of crowds." They have been used to predict Oscar winners, the 2008 Presidential election and corporate strategies, among other things. This month's Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum takes a fresh look at this new crystal ball. Our panel of experts will focus on the usefulness and accuracy of different prediction strategies - from prediction market software to experimental economics which replicates market and business scenarios in the lab. You won't want to miss this window into the future, especially given how volatile these days have been.

Our distinguished panel includes:
· Kay-Yut Chen, principal scientist at Hewlett-Packard
· Mat Fogarty, co-founder and CEO of Xpree
· Kirill Makharinsky, co-founder of YouNoodle.com

Student pre-registrations must be received by Tuesday, January 20th at 5pm by following the instructions below. All registrations after that time must be completed on site on the day of the event. To pre-register, email lester@haas.berkeley.edu. In your email, please include:
Your name
Your major and your year in school
Your phone number

All pre-registrants will receive one FREE drink! (Beer or wine for students over 21 only). Additional drinks are $5 each.

EWMBA eZine - Week of January 8, 2009

In Memory of Bill Sonnenschein –
An influential instructor, an effective mentor, and a great friend

I have a particular memory that is as clear as if it were yesterday. On a sunny Saturday, in April 2008, Bill and his Leadership Communication GSIs - Steven, Bruno and I, went for a quick bite where we enjoyed our usual lunch chitchat. Bill, who was more high-spirited than his usual cheerful self, shared with us the great news that he had been invited to work directly with the leaders of Madagascar in establishing a nation-wide communications program. This program would significantly affect the country’s, and perhaps the whole African region’s, continuous improvement toward development and prosperity.

It was understandable that the grand nature of such an invitation would require him to uproot himself from a home he enjoyed so much. Even though I knew he had such an extreme life changing decision to make, I felt Bill always enjoyed life’s challenges and would think of the greater picture first. I have been one of the few blessed who worked closely with Bill as a GSI and personally witnessed his passion in coaching future leaders and making a positive difference in the world.

As an instructor, Bill's goal was to always ensure that every student would leave with the skills in articulation, confidence and poise, that would immediately be applicable in becoming the new leaders of our time. His uncanny high standards for lecture content and conduct, as well as the great amount of time he spent training his GSIs, built a strong foundation for students’ learning experiences. Bill constantly looked for ways to improve the class experience with feedback from his GSI’s as well as his students. I once asked Bill, "What makes a good Leadership Communication GSI?" He looked at me with a smile, "Be authentic, know when to tell a good story, and really care about the students". I knew that those are also his belief on what makes a good instructor.

At the end of the semester Bill informed us GSIs that he had indeed accepted his appointment in Madagascar. Even with his new obligations he still wanted to work with us this coming April. During the following few months he kept me in the loop about his wonderful experiences in Madagascar, yet never forgot his obligation as a Haas instructor. He kept close contact with me to refine course logistics, and was always responsive, patient, and encouraging. Bill's last e-mail to me concerned tons of requests from his students to swap sessions. Bill wrote,"...it's always been my policy to accommodate people...however we must be careful not to inconvenience other students (by allowing one particular session to swell too large)...." Providing great experience and lessons to remember for life had always been Bill's top priority.

It is very difficult for me to believe that Bill's exciting assignment in Madagascar ended so suddenly and unexpectedly. Just a few days ago we were still exchanging e-mails about how exciting the upcoming course would be. I feel that I have lost an influential instructor, an effective mentor, and a great friend. This feeling is shared by so many in the Haas community. His influence and contributions will live on forever for me and for hundreds of Haas people.

Thank you Bill. Thank you for teaching me the meaning of being authentic, how to tell good stories, and how to be a good leader through powerful communication. You will be missed greatly.

[Ed: The mixer is paid for by your money. So come and make the most of it!]

EWMBAA Vision 2009

As an Evening-Weekend student, you're an automatic member of the EWMBAA. Traveling the campaign trail, I ran into the full gamut of opinions about the EWMBAA - from 'You're doing a great job' to 'More can be done' to 'We have an association??'

The human body has many parts, but alone, the head, an arm, a leg - these can do only so much. When they're connected, they can do so much more. Likewise, the EWMBAA is a body. There are a lot of great ideas floating amongst the EW crowd. Each of us has unique talents, and alone, we can only do a limited amount. The vision for 2009 is to have each member consider itself part of a larger body that together, can really make things happen.

Enjoy your break and come back refreshed with ideas for how you want to make your EWMBA experience even better. We'll work on it together and make it better not just for you, but for everyone.

- Anlei Lee, EWMBAA President 2009

EWMBAA 2008: Message from Jasmin Young
Dear EWMBA students,

How quickly the year has passed! :-)

Many thanks to all of you who have run or participated in events, and made our Haas experience a meaningful one.

- Highlights of 2008 Committee activities -

Academic:
2008 Cheit teaching awards went to Prof Wasim Azhar (weekend) and Prof Catherine Wolfram (weekday)! Many thanks for your efforts, Professors! The team also worked extensively throughout the year with the program office on academic issues, and then finally in a year-end update to the Staff and Faculty. All students are welcome to join in a school rankings discussion with the Haas Marketing team in Spring - watch this space for more details.
Thanks to co-chairs Josh Han and Kiran Prabhakara.

Admissions:
They did an epic project of welcoming our first years with games (like Rock Band), student club panels and mobilizing EWMBA students to help with extensive walkabouts around Berkeley for a warm welcome (in all senses).
Many thanks to our amazing and energetic co-chairs Stacey Fang and Chris Ho
- and member Sharianne Louie for her special efforts.

Alumni Relations:
The innovative Student-Alumni Dinners for 6 were really well-received! Many thanks to co-chairs Dutta Satadip and Ankur Agarwal for working with the alumni office and making all this possible.

Career Services:
We had career-track specific mixers and a number of panel guests speak on topics as varied as finance, to career to entrepreneurship. Thanks to the team and co-chairs Kae Huang and Vidya Chadaga for making those connections possible.

Communications:
We started the eZine and that's been a phenomenal way for us all to keep in touch! We now also have a student discussion board and a voice for the First Years via class reps! Thanks to Anlei Lee and Ben Chong for your consistency, passion and enthusiasm.

Community Service:
We just kept giving back to the community with work at the Family Fun Day at the Palo Alto Art Center, ING Bay to Breakers, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Sacred Heart Community Center. Thanks to Jenn Elliot and Ken So for your persistence in rallying all of us together to make a difference to our community.

Social Committee:
Haas Family Day (with lectures by Prof La Blanc and Prof Borenstein, caricaturist, children's entertainment, DJs) and sponsorship of monthly (or
more) student socials. Many thanks to co-chairs Mandar Shinde (Hats off to you for your superb social/party organizing capabilities. And congratulations on being a Daddy!) and Laurel Coster.

So many committee team members contributed to making these events a success.
Please check out our website http://www.haasewmbaa.com for their names.

We've also welcomed a new Dean and a new Executive Program Director - and now we're welcoming a new EWMBAA President and team. We hope we've left a good legacy behind and are certainly looking forward to an exciting new era for our EWMBA program.

Thanks and happy holidays!

Larry will focus on addressing the following topics:

- Why is it that most Fortune 500 CEOs have sales experience? What skills do they gain from sales roles that make them more effective in their careers?

- Companies invest more in sales organizations during difficult economic times – how can MBA students capitalize on this?
