EWMBAA Committees
Welcome back to the Spring Semester!
As you consider finalizing your class schedule, also think about what EWMBAA Committees you might want to join. Applications to join committees will be available in upcoming weeks.
Below are brief descriptions of what each committee does.
(1) ACADEMIC AFFAIRS: Works to resolve a wide range of academic and administrative issues with the EWMBA program office and Haas school administration.
(2) ADMISSIONS: Helps the school admissions office to attract the best applicants and welcome newly admitted students. Helps integrate first-year students into the school and promotes the concerns of first year students.
(3) ALUMNI RELATIONS: Promotes communications and interaction among current students and the Haas Alumni Network and individual alumni. Promotes Haas EWMBAs among business leaders, and enhances the exposure of EWMBAs to the business community.
(4) CAREER SERVICES: Advocates improvements to the range and quality of career-management and job-search services available through the Career Center to EWMBA students.
(5) COMMUNICATIONS: Facilitates communications and the flow of information among EWMBA students and other groups in the Haas community through our online newsletter, website and other appropriate channels.
(6) COMMUNITY SERVICE: Facilitates the involvement of EWMBA students in community-service activities, and works to recognize the contribution of volunteers.
(7) SOCIAL: Organize social and networking events for students, including with students in other programs or with alumni.
(8)*NEW* TECHNOLOGY: This new committee will work closely with Haas IT to improve student experiences for all technology related aspects including web services, computing, and off-site access.
Look for the applications soon and in the mean time, ask yourself – which of these areas are you most passionate about and where could you make a difference?

Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum
Prediction Markets: Entrepreneurial Opportunities In Fortune Telling
Date: Thursday, January 22, 2009
Time: 6:30-8:30pm
Location: Andersen Auditorium
Wouldn't it be great to know the future? Imagine being able to accurately forecast future sales, assess the likelihood of success for a new startup or anticipate how well stocks will perform. Now we don't need to rely on fortune tellers, palm readers or tarot cards. Enter prediction markets - "smart" markets capable of accurately predicting outcomes of uncertain future events by harnessing what author James Surowiecki coined "the wisdom of crowds." They have been used to predict Oscar winners, the 2008 Presidential election and corporate strategies, among other things. This month's Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum takes a fresh look at this new crystal ball. Our panel of experts will focus on the usefulness and accuracy of different prediction strategies - from prediction market software to experimental economics which replicates market and business scenarios in the lab. You won't want to miss this window into the future, especially given how volatile these days have been.
Our distinguished panel includes:
· Kay-Yut Chen, principal scientist at Hewlett-Packard
· Mat Fogarty, co-founder and CEO of Xpree
· Kirill Makharinsky, co-founder of YouNoodle.com
Student pre-registrations must be received by Tuesday, January 20th at 5pm by following the instructions below. All registrations after that time must be completed on site on the day of the event. To pre-register, email lester@haas.berkeley.edu. In your email, please include:
