EWMBAA eZine - Week of March 27, 2008

Greetings from the EWMBAA Admissions Committee

Did you know you can play an active role in the recruitment of incoming classes and promotion of quality of the overall Haas student body? The admissions committee activities include: student-driven outreach, admission process support, and welcome/orientation activities. Our number one goal is to help the EWMBA Admission and Program Office to attract and retain the best talent we can find and to create the exceptional Haas experience for all. We participate in information sessions/interviews/welcome receptions, and provide Haas tours and class visits. We organize the new student welcoming calls and answer questions for prospective students and newly-admitted students. We also create the entertainment activities for the Orientation!

The new initiatives this year include a rigorous student-run outreach program and a partnership with the Admission Office in refining the EWMBA marketing program. All these fun events require committee members and volunteers like you! You can get more information about what we do and what we've done by visiting our blog at http://haasewmbaa-admissions.blogspot.com/. Come join the fun and put your Haas experience at good use!

Please also check out our upcoming events and volunteer activities below and stay tuned for more to come during the summer including the:

EWMBAA eZine - Week of March 20, 2008

Greetings from the Community Service Committee

Did you know that students who volunteer 50 hours or more during their 3 years at Haas will be Haas Community Service Fellows and will receive special mention at commencement?

Becoming a Haas Fellow is a great way to give back to the community, network with other EWMBA students and looks great on a resume, so why not go for it? We’re looking to expand our efforts this year and get the greater Haas community involved. Our outreach will include events with Haas Faculty, Staff and Full-time Students. We even plan to Co-chair some events with other committees to get even more students involved.

Our first event was on March 9th where Haas students and their significant others attended the Palo Alto Art Center’s Family Fun Day. You can read all about it and see pictures of the event at our blog site (http://haasewmbaa-communityservice.blogspot.com/).

If you weren’t able to attend, no worries! We’ve got plenty more opportunities for you to volunteer. Our next two events will be “Dining out for Life” on Thursday, April 24th and “Bay to Breakers” on Sunday May 18th (Co-chaired event with the Social Committee). More details on both events are coming soon.

Community Service Conspirators (a.k.a The Community Service Committee)

Co-Chairs: Ken So and Jenn Elliott

Good Citizens: Abha Bhagat, Josh Lauman, Paigie Light, Steve Park, Uday Putcha, Rossanna Aranibar Schach

Has the Suspect been Caught?

Well, it really depends on you.

Some of you may have noticed the word SUSPECT in the subject line of last week’s eZine. That is a sign of growing pains. And we need YOUR help to debug it.

Yes, folks, this is a community eZine. Not just something Anlei and Ben dream up every week.

Helping is not complicated: just email us (Ben or Anlei) if you see something strange or incorrect in the eZine. Or if you don’t receive anything by Friday.

Better still, email Ben to let him know that you received the eZine. Nothing sets off the good vibrations better than lots of incoming emails on his BlackBerry. Second years, it’s payback time for Ben’s endless spams on the Yahoo mailing list!

eZine content is also not mandated from up high. All of you are invited to send us stuff to include in the eZine: births, marriages, parties, new drinking spots, job openings, project surveys, “Oh Sh*t!” award nominations etc etc

Reply to this email or you can find our mail addresses at the bottom of the eZine.

DID YOU KNOW?

Are you a runner? Or do you aspire to be a runner? Endurance running is a great way of staying fit. Hitting your 30s (as in AGE) is when you need to start thinking about cholesterol and all that fun stuff. Running helps keep the bad cholesterol at bay. Participating in races is also a great way of meeting people.

We EWMBA folks have our own running club, Running Bears. If you are interested in joining (no dues, no mid-terms, no bid points, no project requirements), send an email to Jessica Clayton (jmgclayton AT mba DOT berkeley DOT edu) or Ben.

EWMBAA eZine - Week of March 13, 2008

Greetings from the EWMBAA Social Committee

Did you know that most students know fewer than 50 of the 240 students in their graduating class? This ratio looks even worse when you consider that there are 1000+ MBA students at any time. Increasing your network of fellow Haas students might help you to land a job, make a sale or even to meet your future spouse.

So, why is it that the EWMBA social functions have such a small turnout?

We want to change that this year and create events that draw larger crowds. We plan to line-up activities with both thematic elements and networking opportunities that build on the Haas brand. That being said, we are a 'Social Committee' so priority number one is of course socializing with fellow students outside of the classroom. We value your feedback and encourage proactive suggestions on events. We will be blogging about things to come at (http://haasewmbaa-social.blogspot.com/).

Our first all EWMBA event centers on 'March Madness' and will be held in Berkeley on March 22nd. More details to come.

Haas Alumni Event: The Business of Green Communities – Sustainable Design for Our Times
Date: Wednesday, March 19
Time: 6:00 – 7:30 PM - Reception and Art Gallery Viewing, 7:30 – 8:30 pm - Presentation
Where: Gap Inc Corporate Headquarters, 2 Folsom St, San Francisco

If a single word were to capture the focus of this century, ‘sustainability’ might well be the buzz word for our times. Learn from a panel of experts who will discuss ‘green building’ as a major, new business trend. The building industry is the largest in the world; it has the greatest impact on energy consumption and the planet. In the USA, buildings account for 40% of carbon emissions –twice that of transportation – and consume 70% of our energy resources. Green building and practices can dramatically reduce energy consumption, lessen the impact on our environment, AND generate very strong returns on investment.

Cost: Admission is $25 for alumni and guests, $10 for students, free for Haas faculty and senior staff, and is LIMITED to the first 350 guests. Pre-registration is required.
