EWMBA eZine - Week of November 24, 2009

Announcements:

What’s happening at Haas?

What does the outside world need to know about us? what have your classmates and professors done that has been most impressive, most important to your experience, and most important to the future of the school? Who makes you think, “THAT is Haas!”

Whether organizing cutting edge conferences, building community, or helping major school initiatives shine, Berkeley MBA students find innumerable ways every year to lead through innovation.

Every year we attempt to capture a representative sampling of those accomplishments in Making it Happen at Haas, AKA, the Haas Achievement Book.

This year, we’d like you to tell us just what and who should be in the book.

We are already building an extensive list of stories to feature--and we’d like to add some of your suggestions to the mix.

Watch your e-mail and the MBA Lounge the week of November 30 for more info!

For further information please contact Valerie Gilbert, Senior Publications Coordinator, vgilbert@haas.berkeley.edu

Haas Thanksgiving Dinner Matching – Share You Feast!

Date: Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Thanksgiving is right around the corner (Thursday November 26th) and with it one of the most American holiday celebrations of all. About one third of the Haas Full-time MBA students are international and many have never attended a Thanksgiving dinner before. Since this is such a uniquely American tradition, we would like to match up Americans who are willing to share their Thanksgiving feast with International Students for whom this might be a once in a lifetime cultural experience.

We are seeking a few host families who live in the Berkeley or Albany area and would be willing to host a Haas student and partner. (We have three international couples who are interested in experiencing Thanksgiving, and one of the couples has a 1-year-old child.) If you would be willing to open your home on this holiday, please email me (andrea_siciliano@mba.berkeley.edu) and let me know how many people would you be willing to host and where you are located. Many thanks, Andrea Siciliano MBA Candidate 2010

Please join a conversation with Wal-Mart's Chief Administrative Officer, where he will share stories about how leading responsibly has helped to positively transform Wal-Mart and consequently has made a broader contribution to society.

Through lectures, cases, a simulation and guest speakers from the venture community, you will gain an understanding of how venture capitalists and their firms identify exciting opportunities, structure deals, build management teams, create ventures of scale and impact a venture’s economics. Learn the methods that VC partnerships utilize to raise the funds they manage, how they make investment decisions, value companies and manage the deal process.

Time: 12:00PM-1:00PM
Location: Webinar
Registration: Sign up on CareerNet

Everyone has a compelling story.” Oprah says. I say everyone has a compelling career tale, complete with passions, turning points, achievements, obstacles, and desires met. And this tale is our most authentic, memorable, and compelling—most likely to get us hired. But most of us don’t know ours.

In this one-hour webinar, I will walk as many of you as I can through your own, unique (and so differentiated) career narrative from undergrad to Berkeley, where we will identify the professional traits and roles that truly define what you do and how you do it. There will be a worksheet handout for all to complete during the session. You can reflect on (or define) your own identity while seeing others discover their own.
