EWMBA Annual Volunteer Day
The EWMBA Program Office and EWMBAA Community Service Committee would like to invite you to our Annual Volunteer Day on Sunday, October 19th, from 9-12pm. Our event for this year will be at the San Francisco Food Bank (900 Pennsylvania Ave. SF). This is a great event where all EWMBA students, as well as program staff members, come together for the day to spend some time out to volunteer for a worthy cause. Alumni and guests of the Haas School will reunite for a festive day back on campus. The annual Haas Homecoming Celebration kicks off with a workshop presentation "2.0 Technology Strategies." Haas will then host a special lecture by NEW Dean Rich Lyons discussing the state of the school. The day's activities include our pre-game Mexican Fiesta Luncheon in the Haas Courtyard with live music and special activities for kids. Then, it's off to Memorial Stadium to watch the Golden Bears defeat the Arizona State Sun Devils. Join us for a great day. All Haas alumni, faculty, students and guests are encouraged to join us!

The forum will serve as a single repository to maintain discussions pertinent to the b-school life of the Haas EWMBA community.
Currently, there's no single system that stores various topics of interest to the EWMBA students. While individual years maintain their own YahooGroups, there's no sharing of information across the spectrum. Moreover, none of the existing solutions (including the YahooGroups) maintain threads of conversation by interest areas. This forum will enable faster access to relevant information. For example, individuals interested in career related topics can directly jump to that folder and search for specific threads. The forum will also serve as a living repository of events and experiences (with courses, professors, school life etc).
Anybody with a '@mba.berkeley.edu' e-mail address can get access to this forum. Others can neither browse nor post topics. All posts will be moderated by the EWMBAA communications committee.

We would be presenting the high level itinerary and answer any questions at 7:45-8:10 on Tuesday 9/30 in C110 and same time on 10/1 in C135.

Welcome to the new Haas family additions and howdy to everyone. The year has already started and we have not done a whole lot of fun yet. Well! Let’s change that!
We closed down on a neat little welcome to the oldies on Saturday, September 13th, where we had a decent mix of 2nd and 3rd year folks socializing. To benefit the first year newbies, we have one about to hole up at Bears Lair this coming Saturday, September 20th. If you are going to be in Berkeley, I am hearing it’s going to be a tear. And a couple of our first year socialites are going to pull it off too - hear hear for Carmen and Shourya.
Beyond the welcome socials, we have a tentative list. And yes, we are definitely doing a 'Guys Nite Out'..tsk tsk. Who am I kidding?
Here is what we anticipate doing:
- Two evening socials. Yes! we do get hate mail from the weekday guys
- One tailgate in plan, we will announce that ahead of time
- Two tandem weekend socials - oldies and newbies
- Peer hiring social event (this might be by invitation, but still pending)
- Year end party

Haas Leadership Club
The Haas Leadership Club is a group interested in defining and practicing leadership. Last year, we had some great successes including the Graduate Business Conference in April 2008. We've put together a line up for Fall 08 that will give us more of what Leadership Communications and the Leadership class started. Besides a natural interest, we're also looking for a small group of Full-Time and Evening & Weekend MBAs with commitment and passion who can eventually take over the club and steer it into the Spring and Fall of 09.
This Fall, we expect to be hosting events including:
Ø A media communications seminar session: professional insights on how to speak to the media (includes practice in front of a camera and mock press statement)
Ø Rich Lyons on leadership & leadership development at Goldman Sachs
Ø Practical exercises in Leadership
Ø Communication on the spot in a corporate and personal setting
Ø Leadership club movie: The Endurance - Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition
Ø The Second Haas MBA Great Debate (subject TBD)
Ø Great speeches with Bill Sonnenschein: a chance to observe and learn the leadership styles of famous leaders
We also encourage non members to join our events, however, there will be a small fee to cover
the expense of hosting that event.

Think of this as a mini firm-night with all of the information and none of the pressure. We are delighted to kick-off this series of events with Arif Janjua, Partner, Boston Consulting Group, San Francisco.

Prior to joining BCG Arif served as CEO of idrive, a storage services company, as President of Consumer Services at Infospace, and as Director of Marketing at Gould Electronics. His consulting experience includes leading the High Technology practice at A.T. Kearney, and serving as Managing Director of the worldwide Technology and Communications Practice at Strategic Decisions Group. Arif received his Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada, and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

EWMBA eZine - Week of September 4, 2008
Introducing the EWMBAA Community Service Committee
As we watch the events unfold in the Gulf coast region this week, we are reminded of the inspiring stories following Katrina: such as the many volunteers from the Bay Area trekking to New Orleans several times a year to help restore St. Bernard Parish. While the Hurricane victims have grabbed our attention, we shouldn't lose sight of the needs in our local communities, from families of seriously ill children to local food banks. Giving back to the community is an important part of the Haas culture. This is where the Community Service Committee comes in.
Meet Our Dedicated Team: Our dedicated members include Abha Bhagat, Josh Lauman, Paigie Light, Monika Matthews, Steve Park, Uday Putcha, and Rossanna Aranibar Schach; co-chairs are Jennifer Elliott and Ken So. But we don't stop here; we continue to look for members to actively participate in organizing events and reaching out to communities and non-profit organizations.
For those who have missed our past events, our team pulled off many successful events this past summer:
* Joining forces with the Social Committee, Steve Park led a group of Haas runners navigate through the retreating French soldiers and naked runners at the Bay-to-Breakers event.
* Abha and Anlei showed off their sales talents (not an easy task selling to MBA students) and ran a successful raffle at Haas EYOP to help China earthquake victims.
* Josh Lauman and inspiring Haas homebuilders flex their muscles to help build low-income homes at the Habitat for Humanities (see Josh's article below).
Don't Miss Out: We have many great events coming up this Fall. Despite the heavy first year course load, we especially encourage the first year students to come out as it is always a great opportunity to meet students in upper years. We are finalizing the event schedule; it will be sent out shortly.
A Reminder of the Haas Community Fellows Program: Any EWMBA student who completes 50 total hours of community service over their three years of education at Haas will qualify. The program poses no limit to the number of fellows who qualify. All Haas Community Fellows will be recognized during their graduation ceremony as their names will be highlighted in the commencement program. To be included, you will need to submit a volunteer hours log sheet by April 15th of the graduating year. Habitat for Humanity = Fun Times
Our annual Habitat for Humanity event was a great success and a good
time was had by all. Haas students partnered with Greater San
Francisco Habitat for Humanity to help build low income housing in
Redwood City. We spent a beautiful, sunny, although a little hot, afternoon nailing shingles, hanging drywall and honing our construction skills. And if you wanted to come but weren't able to make it don't worry we plan on having another Habitat for Humanity event around the same time next year. Welcome (back) to Haas! As the year begins, we wanted to reach out and provide some information around the logistics of and benefits surrounding membership in the full-time MBA Association (MBAA). Why would you do this? Because, to become a member of a student club, you need to first be a member of the full-time MBAA as all student clubs exist under the MBAA.
MBAA Membership Benefits: In addition to being eligible to join clubs, you are also entitled to attend all MBAA-sponsored social and networking events, like monthly consumption functions, where you can meet and mingle with both current students and alumni (For more information:

How to join: The fee to become a member of the MBAA is $50/year. Please make a check payable to MBAA for the number of years you have remaining in your program and deliver that check to the EWMBA office.

Starting this month, the Career Services committee is organizing a series of events to highlight leading consulting firms. Each event will feature a Berkeley Alum from the featured firm who will provide an insider’s view of consulting in general and the firm in particular. Think of this as a mini firm-night with all of the information and none of the pressure. We are delighted to kick-off this series of events with Arif Janjua, Partner, Boston Consulting Group, San Francisco.
In order to maximize the return for all attendees, we encourage only those individuals to attend who are committed to consulting and who have used the resources available on CareerNet to obtain a reasonable understanding of this career path.
Bio:
Arif Janjua - Partner, Boston Consulting Group, San Francisco
Arif joined BCG in 2005. He is active in BCG’s Technology and Communications Practice Area. Arif has over 25 years experience in operational management and consulting in the high technology and services related industries. He has held many roles throughout his career. Prior to joining BCG Arif served as CEO of idrive, a storage services company, as President of Consumer Services at Infospace, and as Director of Marketing at Gould Electronics. His consulting experience includes leading the High Technology practice at A.T. Kearney, and serving as Managing Director of the worldwide Technology and Communications Practice at Strategic Decisions Group. Arif received his Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada, and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

As we watch the events unfold in the Gulf coast region this week, we are reminded of the inspiring stories following Katrina: such as the many volunteers from the Bay Area trekking to New Orleans several times a year to help restore St. Bernard Parish. While the Hurricane victims have grabbed our attention, we shouldn't lose sight of the needs in our local communities, from families of seriously ill children to local food banks. Giving back to the community is an important part of the Haas culture. This is where the Community Service Committee comes in.
Meet Our Dedicated Team: Our dedicated members include Abha Bhagat, Josh Lauman, Paigie Light, Monika Matthews, Steve Park, Uday Putcha, and Rossanna Aranibar Schach; co-chairs are Jennifer Elliott and Ken So. But we don't stop here; we continue to look for members to actively participate in organizing events and reaching out to communities and non-profit organizations.
For those who have missed our past events, our team pulled off many successful events this past summer:
* Joining forces with the Social Committee, Steve Park led a group of Haas runners navigate through the retreating French soldiers and naked runners at the Bay-to-Breakers event.
* Abha and Anlei showed off their sales talents (not an easy task selling to MBA students) and ran a successful raffle at Haas EYOP to help China earthquake victims.
* Josh Lauman and inspiring Haas homebuilders flex their muscles to help build low-income homes at the Habitat for Humanities (see Josh's article below).
Don't Miss Out: We have many great events coming up this Fall. Despite the heavy first year course load, we especially encourage the first year students to come out as it is always a great opportunity to meet students in upper years. We are finalizing the event schedule; it will be sent out shortly.
A Reminder of the Haas Community Fellows Program: Any EWMBA student who completes 50 total hours of community service over their three years of education at Haas will qualify. The program poses no limit to the number of fellows who qualify. All Haas Community Fellows will be recognized during their graduation ceremony as their names will be highlighted in the commencement program. To be included, you will need to submit a volunteer hours log sheet by April 15th of the graduating year. Habitat for Humanity = Fun Times
Our annual Habitat for Humanity event was a great success and a good
time was had by all. Haas students partnered with Greater San
Francisco Habitat for Humanity to help build low income housing in
Redwood City. We spent a beautiful, sunny, although a little hot, afternoon nailing shingles, hanging drywall and honing our construction skills. And if you wanted to come but weren't able to make it don't worry we plan on having another Habitat for Humanity event around the same time next year. Who Are You and Why Are You Sending Me Email?
Greetings from the Communications Committee
Let's introduce our committee - Our awesome members are Sriram Kumar and Christina Stewart, and our Co-Chairs are Ben Chong and Anlei Lee.
For the last year, we've been keeping students in the Evening-Weekend MBA program (EWs) informed through a number of channels:
1. EWMBA eZine - A weekly newsletter that is emailed to all EW students sharing news, announcements, happy hours, and more. You might ask how this differs from the MBA Alert - well, our newsletter caters specifically to the EW crowd whereas the MBA Alert is ublished by the full-time MBA folks. We also have a no-duplication policy which means if it's in the MBA alert, it isn't printed in our newsletter.2. Cohort Representatives - First year representatives updating each cohort on eZine news and first year specific items. These folks help first years wade through all of the information overload and point out what's really important. They also help make sure that event organizers take into account the unique academic schedules of the first year students.3. Haas EWMBAA Blog - A blog that shares what's going on in each EWMBAA committee.4. Coming Soon: Discussion Forum (more info in upcoming eZines)

EWMBA eZine - Week of August 14, 2008
Welcome Back to School!
Over summer, our various committees have kept us all busy with social events (Happy hours, Family days), Dinner-for-8 with Alumni, Orientation (what a phenomenal new group of students!), building a home for Habitat for Humanity and this eZine. They have also continued to plot and plan for more adventures this Fall Semester, such as more alumni dinners, career talks, socials etc. (Check our upcoming eZines for more details.)
We welcome our new Dean, Rich Lyons, back from Goldman Sachs to the Haas School of Business. To learn more about him and his plans, visit http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/haas/dean/. We’re also trying to arrange a Townhall meeting, so he can meet us all in person.
We also extend a warm Californian welcome our new EWMBA Executive Program Director, Dave Gent (dgent -at- haas.berkeley.edu) – who has spent much of his career at Kellogg. Jen Sang will continue to be our Director for Academic Affairs and will also be working on best practices across Haas as Director of Cross-Program Initiatives. We shall miss the indefatigable Beth Hoch from Admissions, as she moves on to start her Masters in Education at Harvard. We wish them all the very best!!
