Entrepreneurial Best Practices Series: IP & Legal

Speakers: Timothy Harris and Michael Stallman from Morrison & Foerster LLP

Intellectual property is one of the most valuable fruits of entrepreneurship’s labor, and has been the foundation upon which thousands of successful business enterprises have been built. This session will cover the legal issues surrounding intellectual property and its importance throughout a company’s lifespan. A team consisting of an IP lawyer and a startup corporate lawyer will provide a “crash course” on patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets; discuss IP issues commonly faced at the time of forming new businesses; explain how IP is exploited during the business development stage of a new business; explore the role of IP when a new business raises financing; and consider the impact of IP on an acquisition of the business.

Attend this session to gain a valuable understanding of how these most important legal concepts are applied in the business context, and you may avoid many of the common pitfalls that can damage or ruin your venture.

Dean’s Speaker Series: Tom Campbell, Former Haas Dean & 2010 Gubernatorial Candidate

Tom’s talk will explore the growing undermining of trust in our political leaders, as the public questions the true reasons behind our policy initiatives. He will discuss such recent examples as the rationales for the war in Iraq and the rationale for staying in Afghanistan, the initiatives in California last May, the health care bill, and financial services regulation.

The event is free and open to the entire Haas community. Registration is required.

Tom was Dean of the Haas School from 2002 to 2008, during which time he took a one-year sabbatical to serve as the state’s director of finance under Governor Schwarzenegger. Previously, Tom served as a state senator and a five-term US congressman representing the Santa Clara district. He also was a professor of law at Stanford for 19 years.

Modeled after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Technology Exposition allows small and large firms alike to share their latest products with students and faculty at UC Berkeley. Last year, several thousand visited the event; participants include such notable firms as Dell, Google, and Microsoft.

The annual Technology Exposition is a chance for students to discover the latest technologies, as companies unveil and showcase their newest innovations. Representing diverse industries and products ranging from databases to video games, the Technology Exposition aims to provide an accurate cross-section of the computing industry. With your help, we hope to introduce some of the newest tech products available in the world to our unique, innovative campus community.

At the same time, the event offers a unique opportunity for participating companies to market their products to an ideal consumer base and job opportunities to potential future employees. Your participation in this event will allow your firm to introduce itself to UC Berkeley’s 30,000 potential customers and employees. We hope to familiarize motivated students with your company’s unique culture and future prospects.

Our exposition consists of multiple, self-governed booths similar to shows such as Comdex and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Each company will be responsible for manning their booth from 11 am to 5 pm. You may display your company's technologies, offer promotions, present videos and/or conduct surveys and market research. We would like to focus on featuring new consumer products and technologies for the university level target audience. However, we also recommend companies to present brochures, placards or presentations on relevant topics.

The theme of the conference is "Diversity: From Buzzword to Action." This year’s conference will challenge students to think about diversity beyond recruiting and retention and consider how the skill of being able to manage differences and leverage differing perspectives is essential to a future business leader’s success.

The conference is a day-long event which will feature two keynote addresses, a networking lunch with representatives from bay area companies, and an afternoon of breakout sessions. In addition to featuring a panel discussion on best practices in recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce, the breakouts will include interactive workshops addressing the role of diversity in everyday management topics such as communications, team and group dynamics, and innovation.

Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC)

The Power of Business to Solve Social Problems

GSEC engages creative minds around the world to develop bolder and less conventional business solutions to global poverty. Open to all students worldwide—and across fields of study—GSEC seeks innovative social business ideas that provide lasting solutions to global economic development.

Semi-finalist teams from around the world will be travel to Seattle for GSEC Week (March 1-5, 2010), where they pitch their business ideas to judges and the UW community, visit regional companies, and compete for up to $17,500 in prize money, including global health awards.

Business ideas may focus on any industry area, such as global health, environment, energy, agriculture, education, or technology. Multidisciplinary teams are highly encouraged.

Apply by November 11, 2009
Applications consist of an executive summary of the business idea and an online registration. Applications go through two rounds of reviews between Nov 11 – early December. Semi-finalist teams are selected in December 2009 and invited to participate in GSEC Week (Mar 1-5, 2010). Semi-finalist teams work with mentors between Dec – March, then travel to Seattle for GSEC Week where they visit regional companies, pitch to potential investors, and compete for prize money. About GSEC
Each year, the Global Business Center brings the world to University of Washington: a select group of interdisciplinary teams are invited to Seattle to participate in GSEC Week at the UW Foster School of Business. Teams attend exclusive company visits, receive feedback on their presentation and pitch their business ideas to judges as they compete for prize money.

From affordable, nutritious meals for slum dwellers in Mumbai, to mobile wind turbines in Kazakhstan, to solar oven-powered water purification systems in Tanzania, GSEC business plans demonstrate the power of business to create sustainable, positive change to some of the world’s most challenging social problems.

Since GSEC began over 300 students from more than 25 countries have participated in the program. GSEC fosters interdisciplinary collaboration—across fields of study and among academic institutions. The entrepreneurial environment is rapidly becoming global through the mobility of capital, people and technology. The Lester Center has partnered with Intel Corporation to create the premier global, technology-focused, business plan competition in the world. This competition brings the winning teams from university-centric competitions from around the world here to UC Berkeley to compete in the heart of the U.S. entrepreneurial community. In emerging markets, innovation and entrepreneurship are particularly important. The Challenge showcases business opportunities from these areas that have the greatest potential for a positive impact on society through the deployment of new and truly innovative technologies. Through the Challenge, Intel and UC Berkeley are committed to aiding universities worldwide in providing an environment, including technical and business curricula, that supports entrepreneurs and helps them make their dreams a reality. This year, more the than 20 entrants will compete in a semi-final round on Wednesday, November 18 and be narrowed down to eight teams that will compete in the finals held during the Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum on Thursday, November 19th. The teams represent universities in Latin America, Europe, Asia and the U.S. This diverse group of student teams will bring with them some of the brightest new ideas in the world! Don’t miss this exciting event where the eight finalists will present their plans -- and the winners will be announced.

Venture capital is a driving force behind innovation and entrepreneurship and has funded many of the successful companies in technology- and science-based industries. Yet the inner workings of venture capital firms are a well-guarded secret. The unique, opaque culture of venture capital is closed to those without privileged entrée. This course offers a window into the workings of the most successful venture capitalists in the world’s premiere innovation cluster, Silicon Valley California.

Program Description
By the end of this course, you will become an insider into the venture capital process. Through lectures, cases, a simulation and guest speakers from the venture community, you will gain an understanding of how venture capitalists and their firms identify exciting opportunities, structure deals, build management teams, create ventures of scale and impact a venture’s economics. Learn the methods that VC partnerships utilize to raise the funds they manage, how they make investment decisions, value companies and manage the deal process.

Join us next Sunday, the 25th, for the annual Iron Chef Cook-Off. This is one of the biggest and most exciting events of the year for the Culinary Club. The Arch Street houses (1329 and 1331 Arch St) will be hosting us this year, so we will have two full kitchens to work in!

How it works
The Culinary Club will provide basic ingredients (meat, starch, vegetables and basic seasonings). Head Chefs will be given this list on Friday. They will then be allowed to plan draft menus and bring any other ingredients, seasonings or sauces they feel will help their team. Teams will be finalized on the day of the event and the secret ingredient will be presented at 5pm. All teams will have 30 minutes to plan their meals before beginning to cook. All teams must prep an appetizer, entree and dessert. Judging will take place at 7:30PM after which everyone will get the chance to taste the dishes!

Entrepreneurial Best Practices Series: IP & Legal

Intellectual property is one of the most valuable fruits of entrepreneurship’s labor, and has been the foundation upon which thousands of successful business enterprises have been built. This session will cover the legal issues surrounding intellectual property and its importance throughout a company’s lifespan. A team consisting of an IP lawyer and a startup corporate lawyer will provide a “crash course” on patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets; discuss IP issues commonly faced at the time of forming new businesses; explain how IP is exploited during the business development stage of a new business; explore the role of IP when a new business raises financing; and consider the impact of IP on an acquisition of the business.

Attend this session to gain a valuable understanding of how these most important legal concepts are applied in the business context, and you may avoid many of the common pitfalls that can damage or ruin your venture.

Modeled after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Technology Exposition allows small and large firms alike to share their latest products with students and faculty at UC Berkeley. Last year, several thousand visited the event; participants include such notable firms as Dell, Google, and Microsoft.

The annual Technology Exposition is a chance for students to discover the latest technologies, as companies unveil and showcase their newest innovations. Representing diverse industries and products ranging from databases to video games, the Technology Exposition aims to provide an accurate cross-section of the computing industry. With your help, we hope to introduce some of the newest tech products available in the world to our unique, innovative campus community.

At the same time, the event offers a unique opportunity for participating companies to market their products to an ideal consumer base and job opportunities to potential future employees. Your participation in this event will allow your firm to introduce itself to UC Berkeley’s 30,000 potential customers and employees. We hope to familiarize motivated students with your company’s unique culture and future prospects.

Our exposition consists of multiple, self-governed booths similar to shows such as Comdex and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Each company will be responsible for manning their booth from 11 am to 5 pm. You may display your company's technologies, offer promotions, present videos and/or conduct surveys and market research. We would like to focus on featuring new consumer products and technologies for the university level target audience. However, we also recommend companies to present brochures, placards or presentations on relevant topics.

The theme of the conference is "Diversity: From Buzzword to Action." This year’s conference will challenge students to think about diversity beyond recruiting and retention and consider how the skill of being able to manage differences and leverage differing perspectives is essential to a future business leader’s success.

The conference is a day-long event which will feature two keynote addresses, a networking lunch with representatives from bay area companies, and an afternoon of breakout sessions. In addition to featuring a panel discussion on best practices in recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce, the breakouts will include interactive workshops addressing the role of diversity in everyday management topics such as communications, team and group dynamics, and innovation.

Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC)

The Power of Business to Solve Social Problems

GSEC engages creative minds around the world to develop bolder and less conventional business solutions to global poverty. Open to all students worldwide—and across fields of study—GSEC seeks innovative social business ideas that provide lasting solutions to global economic development.

Semi-finalist teams from around the world will be travel to Seattle for GSEC Week (March 1-5, 2010), where they pitch their business ideas to judges and the UW community, visit regional companies, and compete for up to $17,500 in prize money, including global health awards.

Business ideas may focus on any industry area, such as global health, environment, energy, agriculture, education, or technology. Multidisciplinary teams are highly encouraged.

Apply by November 11, 2009
Applications consist of an executive summary of the business idea and an online registration. Applications go through two rounds of reviews between Nov 11 – early December. Semi-finalist teams are selected in December 2009 and invited to participate in GSEC Week (Mar 1-5, 2010). Semi-finalist teams work with mentors between Dec – March, then travel to Seattle for GSEC Week where they visit regional companies, pitch to potential investors, and compete for prize money. About GSEC
Each year, the Global Business Center brings the world to University of Washington: a select group of interdisciplinary teams are invited to Seattle to participate in GSEC Week at the UW Foster School of Business. Teams attend exclusive company visits, receive feedback on their presentation and pitch their business ideas to judges as they compete for prize money.

From affordable, nutritious meals for slum dwellers in Mumbai, to mobile wind turbines in Kazakhstan, to solar oven-powered water purification systems in Tanzania, GSEC business plans demonstrate the power of business to create sustainable, positive change to some of the world’s most challenging social problems.

Since GSEC began over 300 students from more than 25 countries have participated in the program. GSEC fosters interdisciplinary collaboration—across fields of study and among academic institutions. Student team members from the UW alone have come from the schools of business, engineering, health sciences, international studies, law, and public administration.

GSEC is organized by the University of Washington’s Global Business Center at the Michael G. Foster School of Business, with the support of Microsoft (GSEC Grand Prize sponsor) and the UW Department of Global Health.

Then mark your calendars, Saturday, September 19th is your opportunity to enter THE GAME.

THE GAME is an urban puzzle hunt that involves a series of clues. Each clue solved leads to the location where the next clue can be found. Check out some of the practice clues here. In this version of The Game, your team will travel through various neighborhoods in San Francisco. The final clue will lead teams to the finish line at an undisclosed location. (Our estimate is that you'll get there early evening).

No prior knowledge of San Francisco geography is required, in fact, THE GAME can be an interesting and fun way to explore some famous (and not so famous) sights in the city. Note: this is not a Haas-exclusive event, so feel free to invite partners and friends!

Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) Information Session

Interested in venture capital? The VCIC Organizing Committee is a great opportunity for students who are interested in a career in venture capital to make contacts in the industry and gain a greater understanding of how VC firms evaluate opportunities.

We are currently seeking VC enthusiasts to take up the reins and organize the 2010 UC Berkeley VCIC competition. Responsibilities include securing sponsorship, entrepreneurs and VC judges, as well as selecting teams to compete.

We will be holding an information session about what’s involved and the application process at 12:30pm on Wednesday, September 23 in C135. We will also be available to talk to EWMBA students during the evening class dinner breaks; please contact Fiona Miller (see below) if you are interested in meeting during the evening break.

About the competition: The UC Berkeley VCIC allows students to put themselves in a VC firm’s shoes for the day. Student teams evaluate business plans and pitches from entrepreneurs currently seeking funding, and are evaluated by a judging panel of experienced venture capitalists. Last year, 31 teams competed for 5 berths in the UC Berkeley competition. The winning team represents UC Berkeley at the regional event at USC; our 2009 winners won the Entrepreneur’s Choice Award and was placed third overall at the regional final. The UC Berkeley competition is held in early February, and team applications to compete will be sought later in the Fall semester.

Join us for the first Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum of the 2009-2010 season for a look at "Innovating at Scale: Google."

John Hanke (Haas MBA ’96) will be joined by three top innovators at Google who will touch on their experiences developing and launching Google's "Geo" tools (Earth, Maps, etc.). The panelists will challenge common notions of what it takes to launch "early and often" --and successfully-- at a company like Google.

Focusing on goal setting, team size, and management approaches, the panel will probe the dynamics of product development applicable to entrepreneurs. Those with a computer science or engineering background will find the panel particularly relevant.
The program begins at 6:30 PM, with a networking hour with complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres in the Bank of America Forum at the Haas School of Business. This event is organized by the EWMBA Alumni Relations Committee, as a part of the 'Special Interest Group' networking dinner series. The alumni dinner series aims at providing a venue for EWMBA students to meet other students who intend to pursue their careers in a particular industry and also gain perspectives from alumni who work in that industry.

Mat Fogarty, MBA 01, Founder and CEO, Crowdcast.

Mat is an entrepreneur and visionary in organizational dynamics. Featured on the cover of Inc. Magazine, Mat is a regular speaker on the enterprise forecasting and prediction markets circuit. Prior to founding Crowdcast, Mat held senior positions in FP&A at EA and Unilever. While at EA, he pioneered the use of prediction markets for forecasting key metrics, an initiative which has since expanded company-wide. Mat is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and holds an MBA from UC Berkeley and BS in Management Science from the London School of Economics.

Arun Ramamoorthy, MBA 05, Principal, Pinnacle Ventures.

Before joining Pinnacle, Arun was in the Corporate Branding and Strategic Marketing team within the Sales and Marketing Group at Intel, where his focus was on technology leadership marketing. Prior to his marketing role, Arun spent over six years managing technology development programs at Intel. As a Program Manager at Intel, he was responsible for lithography infrastructure development. In this role, he managed several development programs at suppliers, universities and National Labs, worked with industry consortia and Intel Capital on collaborations and investments in the lithography supply-chain. Early in his career, he spent several years working on next generation assembly and test technology development. Arun has an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India.
