EWMBA eZine - Week of July 17, 2008

Enrich your MBA with an experience in housing construction!

Seriously, come join us in serving the community. The EWMBA program is partnering with Peninsula Habitat for Humanity to help provide affordable housing for low income families in the bay area.

We will be working on a construction project in Redwood City, but no special skills are needed. It promises to be a fun filled day and a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of your classmates better.

Enjoy your summer and I look forward to seeing you on August 9th!

If you have any questions or concerns please email me at josh_lauman@mba.berkeley.edu and for more information on Peninsula Habitat for Humanity visit their website at www.peninsulahabitat.org

What : Haas Habitat for Humanity Day
When: August 9, 2008 8:30 AM - 4:30PM
Where: 122 Lincoln Ave. Redwood City, CA 94061-2323

- From the Community Services Committee

eZine publication information

The EWMBA eZine is a vehicle to help you publicize an event or cause you are organizing or any other announcement of interest to the EWMBA community.

The eZine is mailed out every Thursday. Due to various factors (jobs, MBA-spouse/kids, life, universe etc), we cannot guarantee a time at which we will mail out the eZine on Thursday.

Therefore, help us to help you by sending information early enough for inclusion in the eZine. For example, if you have an event early in the week, send us the event information by Wednesday of the previous week.

Most importantly, please don’t assume that everyone in the EWMBA check their berkeley.edu emails every 5 minutes. Believe it or not, some folks do not have home Internet access and/or check only once a week. Nothing wrong with that: we all live different lives. Therefore, last minute announcements are usually ineffective.

Enjoy the rest of summer,

The Communications Committee

Guys Nite Out this Saturday

Summer break is great (for those not taking classes this summer). But then there is no excuse you can use to get away from MBA-spouse/significant-other, newly-rediscovered fatherhood responsibilities, mowing the lawn, mother-in-law and the “need” to bring whiny kids to watch WALL.E.

Here is where the Social Committee comes to the rescue with the Guys Nite Out event!

See details below.

Since it’s a “guys-only” event, you’ll be safe from penetrating questions like “tell me, just who is going to be there?”….

The ladies will ALSO have an equally fabulous event. Yes, we are equal-opportunity here! It’ll be time to prepare MBA-spouse/significant-other to have dinner alone, re-learn diaperology and how to feed the kid(s). Just in time for the start of the fall semester, I’d say

The ladies will get to bond as soon as Laurel finds a good date for the "Girls Nite Out". Please bug Laurel Coster at laurel_coster@mba.berkeley.edu if you have preferences, ideas or any particular urgency (to bond/get away from it all/drink etc).

Note: All political incorrectness is deliberate and made in the spirit of fun/humor/parody of real life.

Speakers Needed!

The Haas EWMBA Association is planning an end-of-the-year party on June 22 at Haas.

We plan to have 2 Haas student speakers and 2 faculty lecturers giving students and families talks in the morning session (10AM-12PM) to enrich this event. The 20-minute student talk can be on any business-related subject that has some impact on work and life. Topics can include how to launch a startup or the pricing strategy behind a given product or service etc.

It is a great opportunity to demonstrate the advantage of the EWMBA program and to promote an atmosphere of sharing and learning from each other. However, the success of this event is largely dependent on you. If you are willing to be a volunteer speaker, please send a topic and abstract to josh_han@mba.berkeley.edu

The 2-hour session is divided into

1) 2 faculty lectures
Each 40-minute lecture is 30-minute presentation plus 10-minute QA.

2) 2 student lectures
Each 20-minute lecture is 15-min presentation plus 5-minute QA.

Most job postings for non-technical positions call for candidates with excellent communications skills. You can start building up yours by paying attention to the use of articles in written English. Articles are words like “the”, “a” and “an”.
You really have to pay attention here as Microsoft Word does not usually highlight article-related mistakes.

EWMBA eZine - Week of May 15, 2008

A Word from the EWMBAA President

First of all, congratulations to the graduating class of 2008!

In the past 6 months, the EWMBAA has had quite a whirl. Here are some updates:

Academic: Winners of the Cheit Teaching Award are Professor Catherine Wolfram (Evening) and Professor Wasim Azhar (Weekend), with special mention to Professor Ganesh Iyer and Professor Meghan Busse. The GSI Award goes to Robert Seaman, with special mention to for Todd Fitch. (Many thanks to Kiran Prabhakara for driving the nomination process!) Professor Stowsky, new Dean of Academic Instruction, also held Town Hall meetings to gather feedback. Sarah Milstein has been following up with Jay – so please let her have your ideas. We’re also exploring ways to make video recording better. Please send feedback to co-chairs Kiran Prabhakara and Josh Han.

Admissions: Co-chairs Stacey Fang and Chris Lin – and their volunteer teams - have been working welcoming Round 1 students on message boards and with personal phone calls. Thanks to all our current EWMBA students who attended the Round 1 Welcome Reception!

Alumni and Careers: Satadip Dutta (co-chair for Alumni Relations) helped put together the talk on Consulting (with alumni Richard Chen), while Kae Huang (co-chair of Careers) moderated the Banking/Finance (with alumni Hiram Moy, and his friends Tim Ome and Michelle Lee). We’re exploring affiliations with professional organizations (like ASCEND which focuses on increasing diversity in the banking/finance world.)

Communication: Co-chairs Ben Chong and Anlei Lee have been excellent in stimulating communications with this eZine and with our new interactive website. Thanks also to Mimi Frusha and our cohort reps for helping to pass messages along! We ran a survey on how students want to communicate, and are exploring a secure repository for class feedback and discussion.

Community Service: Kenneth So and Jennifer Elliot have organized a couple of Community Service events so far at Palo Alto. Next up, Bay to Breakers this Sunday - a joint effort with our Social Committee (Thanks Ting-Mao Chao!) with exclusive limited edition Haas EWMBA t-shirts (designed by Kenneth So!) We’re working on ways we can better communicate global emergency fund relief awareness – and you’ll find links on our website.

Social: Co-chairs Mandar Shinde and Laurel Coster have organized 4 after-school socials and we’re having more over Summer! If you’re having an EWMBAA social event and would like us to sponsor a keg of beer, please contact our co-chairs.

The Executive team has also been involved in the searches for a permanent EWMBA Program Director and for the new Haas Dean. In addition, we’re working on a Haas Family Day on June 22, stay tuned! We’re always open to having new ideas for the rest of this calendar year, so please let us know!

- Jasmin

Current student volunteers make phone calls to the 2nd round admitted students to congratulate them for their admission, welcome them to the program, and answer questions. Calls should be completed by June 10 and we typically make 8-12 calls per volunteer.

Please contact Stacey Fang stacey_fang@mba.berkeley.edu or Christopher Lin christopher_lin@mba.berkeley.edu if you are available to volunteer.

DID YOU KNOW?
If you Google for “haas mba yearbook”, you will get a link to the MBA Class of 2003 yearbook webpage. Since your Haas experience is once in a lifetime, you may want to think about doing a yearbook for your year. The ‘09ers will be doing one and will be looking for contributions from fellow ‘09ers.
